Thursday’s “Call for Hope” telethon for the Poverello House eclipsed its goal by raising $157,000.

ABC30 aired the telethon, which was hosted at the Granville Homes conference center at Herndon and Fruit avenues.

The funds will benefit the center’s operations and share the organization’s work in our community.

Poverello House is a private, nonprofit organization that has been serving the hungry, homeless, and destitute since 1973.

The late “Papa” Mike McGarvin started the nonprofit by handing out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the hungry in Chinatown.
