NewsA California school district has agreed to pay $100,000 in a settlement to a mother who claimed her daughter was ‘socially transitioned’ to a boy at school without her awareness or approval.
Jessica Konen stated that her then 11-year-old daughter, Alicia, was suggested by her school in the Spreckels Union School District in Monterey County that her emotional distress might be due to not acknowledging her “real” identity. The school subsequently allowed her to use the boys’ bathroom, referred to her with male pronouns, and facilitated her ‘social transition’ away from her birth gender.

Upon discovering her daughter’s unauthorized gender transition, Konen filed a lawsuit against the district. Her daughter has since chosen to identify as female again. After the settlement, Konen, represented by the Center for American Liberty, pledged to continue advocating for parental rights.
The Spreckels Union School District has not accepted any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
Mark Trammell, Executive Director of the Center for American Liberty, sees the outcome as pivotal. “Parents have an inherent right to be involved in pivotal decisions concerning their children’s lives,” he said.
Konen hopes her experience will be a lesson for other parents. She also emphasized the need for greater transparency in schools.
The Spreckels Union School District declined to comment on the matter.
